Lana Velez is an Assistant Professor of English at Central Virginia Community College. She earned her B.A. in English with a Minor in Communications from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and her M.A. in English from James Madison University. In addition to teaching English, Lana also teaches selfdefense classes at CVCC; she is a certified Rape Aggression Defense instructor and a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan karate. She and her husband Sam have two furry children, both Beagles. Kevin Riley is the Student Services Coordinator at Central Virginia Community College. He earned his B. A. in Communication Studies with a Minor in History from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Abstract
This author organized and taught the new ENG 09/111 classes at her college, as well as authoring the course text and workbook. In this article, she details the course structure, discusses its statistical assessment, and includes the reactions from students who have taken the class.
