Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
Abstract
Pre-service teachers need foundational knowledge and area content to be prepared to step into a classroom. However, many of the skills needed to effectively teach and lead a classroom come through practice. Giving students hands-on experiences in online asynchronous classes with no field placement requirement is a challenge. This essay examines one particular course and how implementing an online simulation requirement provides students with an experiential learning opportunity and a change to develop classroom management and leadership skills. Students in the course were successful completing the simulations and reflected on what they learned through the simulation and how to apply those skills to their future jobs. Other disciplines may also want to consider experiential learning opportunities to provide their students with concrete hands-on skills and to support the mission of the Virginia Community College System.
